  • Fresno is the county seat of Fresno County in the U.S. State of California. Estimates by the California Department of Finance (2005) approximate a city population of 464,727 and a metropolitan area of 1,002,284. Fresno is the sixth-largest city in California ,the largest inland city in the state, and is listed as one of the top 50 largest cities in the country (the 36th to be exact). It is located at 36°47' North, 119°48' West, in the San Joaquin Valley portion of California's expansive Central Valley.

    Agriculture is the backbone of the Fresno area, employing nearly 20% of the workforce and providing more than $3.5 billion for the local economy. A majority of America's produce is grown in California's Central Valley, and Fresno County is the number one agricultural county in the United States. By 2005 more than 7,500 farmers were growing 250 types of crops on 1 million acres of some of the world's most productive farmland. Major crops are grapes, cotton, cattle, tomatoes, milk, plums, turkeys, oranges, peaches, and nectarines. A large food processing industry has developed around the agricultural activity; a number of canning, curing, drying, and freezing plants are located in the area. Notable agriculture employers to the area includes: Sun-Maid, Kraft Foods, Foster Farms, Zacky Farms, and ConAgra's David Sunflowers Seeds.

    Fresno is served by a main north/south freeway California State Highway 99. Other highways include the California State Highway 168 (Sierra Freeway), which is an east-west bound freeway that leads to the city of Clovis and Huntington Lake, California State Highway 41 (Yosemite Freeway/Eisenhower Freeway) that comes into Fresno from the south via Paso Robles, and California State Highway 180(Kings Canyon Freeway) that comes from the west via Mendota and from the east in Kings Canyon National Park.

    Fresno Yosemite International Airport  is the largest airport and site of commercial airline service. The airport serves an estimated 1.2 million passengers annually on both domestic and international flights.
